CHAMBER PROFILE

The Kedah Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCCI) is the foremost institution representing the Chinese business community in northern regions of Kedah State. It is also one of the most active business associations in Kedah State. The various activities of the Chamber have attracted the attention of the Government as well as of the private sector by virtue of the fact that the Chamber is strategically located in Bandaraya Alor Star which is the centre of state politics and economics.


FOUNDATION

The Chamber was founded on 14th June, 1936. When it was first established, it was known as the "Kedah Chinese Chamber", and in 1941, the association was renamed as the "Chinese Commercial Bureau", In 1947, it was renamed again as the "Kedah Chinese Chamber of Commerce". On the 6th November, 1985, at the Annual General Meeting, it was decided that the Chamber be renamed as "KEDAH CHINESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY".


MEMBERSHIP

The membership of the Chamber comprises the following categories:
A. Business / Trade Association Member;
B. Firm / Company Life Member;
C. Individual Life Member.

Registered trade associations, firms / companies, and professionals of Chinese origin in Kedah State may apply for the membership of the Chamber. Its total direct membership as at 26th August, 2008 is 957 comprising of 8 business / trade association members, 567 individual life members, 380 firm / company life members. Each and every business / trade association has its own membership and their members are indirect members of the Chamber which if takes into account well exceeding 1,450 in number.


ORGANIZATION

A General Meeting of members of the Chamber shall constitute the supreme authority of the Chamber. The Council which consists of 35 members elected from among the individual life members, firms/companies life members, and 5 members appointed by the committee members from among trade /business associations members, are formed to manage the affairs of the Chamber after the General Meeting.

To promote the activities of the Chamber, various committees like General Affairs, Financial Planning, Industry, Commerce, Legal, Welfare, Culture & Education, Human Resource Development, Fiscal & Economic Research, Agriculture & Primary Industries and Information Technology as well as other ad-hoc committees are formed.


OBJECTIVES & ACTIVITIES

1. TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE THE ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES OF MALAYSIA
* To deal with commercial and industrial enquires.
* To compile and analyze local and international trade and economic data.
* To organize trade missions and exhibitions.
* To arbitrate and settle industrial and trade disputes among members.

2. TO LAISE BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR
* To hold dialogue with various ministries and statutory bodies.
* To keep members informed of government policies, rules and regulations.
* To submit views and suggestions of the private sectors to the authorities.

3. TO PROMOTE SOCIAL WELFARE, CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
* To contribute towards charities and social welfare bodies.
* To provides scholarship and loans to deserving students of poor and needy background for tertiary education.
* To sponsor various social activities.

4. TO PROMOTE HUMAN RESOURCE TRAINING
* To conduct courses on manpower training.

SECRETARIAT

The Chamber's administrative and routine affairs are handled by the Secretariat. Currently, the Secretariat has a total staff of 3. They have to take charge of the Chamber Activities, Administration and Accounts.
